don't mess with dixieTraining my puppy Dixie for fall turkey hunting made me realize just how much I enjoy this time of the year. I used to take my fall vacation during Wisconsin's deer hunt, now I'm going to take it during the fall turkey hunting season instead. I prefer fall turkey hunting because I get to see far more game of all kinds, and it's a much nicer time of the year. The temperature's in the fifties, and we go for long walks when the colorful fall landscape is at it's peak, instead of stump sitting in the freezing November woods, after all the leaves are brown, and before we get snow. If you're a hunter who likes walking in the fall woods with your loyal companion, try fall turkey dog hunting, and you'll soon be making plans for that Thanksgiving or Christmas turkey.
Some don't know their history, and associate turkey dogs with the South, but it's really more of a Northern tradition. Still, I always liked the sound of Dixie, so that's what I named her. Or Dix for short.
I called in this 3+ year old gobbler in the middle of the afternoon during the fourth week of the spring season here in Wisconsin. He weighed 26 lb. 4 oz., had an 11 1/2" beard and 1 3/16" spurs. His wingtips were well worn from strutting, and one of his spurs had the tip broke off, from fighting by the looks of him. An hour earlier we had called in 4 two year old toms twenty acres away with our contented clucking, but they didn't want anything to do with us once we started the sweet hen talk. Probably learnt their lesson coming to see the local hens, and running into this big bruiser instead. Dixie gave him her scent of approval.

Watching them hunt together is sure fun, they compliment each other so well. They're quite the team.
